Well, I’m a couple of days late posting this. My real world job called and I had to go for a couple of days, but we did run Calypso’s routine on Saturday to a very good success!

Breaking the buck out of Calypso has been a long project. We are passing the 6 month mark now. We had taken her back to square one. Merely leading her was hazardous to your heels and personal space! We are past all that at this point. My daughter has just recently taken a seat in the saddle. With all the ground work behind her Calypso did just fine.
I’ve lost track of the time. We’re around 6 months of breaking the buck out of Calypso. The last post, Part 3, I mentioned the bit being a distraction for Calypso. So we tossed the bit and went for a side-pull. Actually a drop nose band with reins. (more…)
Here we are about 4 months in. Still doing ground work. We have eliminated any sign of bucking at the trot. She is walking fantastically. There’s no more kicking the handlers heels and personal space is established. (more…)
Now, where were we? Week 6 of breaking the buck out of Calypso? Weeks 6 and 7 were the same, reinforcing the basic of walking respectfully while being led, turning her head when indicated with the reins. (more…)
